Schools and educational institutions constantly endeavor to ensure student safety from physical & online threats. Our client’s cloud-based web filtering software ensures student safety while online, either from school or at home. The solution monitors the students’ “online activity” across multiple devices, networks, and platforms (Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, and Chromebooks), using AI. Smart monitoring is required to distinguish between genuine searches and those that are indicators of potentially harmful behavior. Trigent’s unique understanding of the EdTech domain, QA processes, skilled resources, and team flexibility helped them achieve a superior security system.
The client is one of the fast-growing EdTech companies that provide cloud-based web filtering and parental control applications that work across schools and homes. Their next-generation flagship product uses AI to process student activities across emails, searches, social media activity, and apps. It alerts administrators to potentially harmful behaviors as they occur—giving schools yet another layer of protection for their students and staff. They currently provide safety for over 10 million students in more than 15,000 schools, monitoring 5 billion+ online activities.
Their solution, which differed from the traditional internet security using firewalls and filtering rules, needed a QA & Testing partner who had an in-depth understanding of the education sector. QA & Testing was particularly challenging as it required testers to understand the students’ perspective and anticipate different ways that the product could be compromised. Additionally, the solution needed to work seamlessly across a multitude of combinations of operating systems(OS) & devices.
Trigent’s innovative solution required the team to do research and study the behavioral patterns of a K-12 student, how they use their devices, different search keyword combinations, and prepare a testing strategy. The study led to testers, thinking as K-12 users, covering business-critical scenarios across new features and upgrades.
Given the combinations of operating systems & devices, omnichannel testing and cross-browser testing was done. These were run to identify weak links in the “Filter application” features. Complex rules were covered, focused on device and browser weaknesses, leading to a ‘certification’ kind of process across devices, operating systems, browser combinations. The team ensured that each new feature added to the application improved the user experience. With a highly robust product and continual feature enhancements, the web filter application witnessed exponential growth.
